Convener of RevolutionNow Movement, Omoyele Sowore, has been shot by a police officer, Gbam Tv report.

Sowore, who confirmed the incident on his Twitter page, said he was shot by a female Police officer at the Unity Fountain in Abuja on Monday.

Sowore had gathered with others at the Unity Fountain for a protest.

He wrote, “Just been shot by a police officer, ACP Atine at the Unity Fountain in Abuja.

“#RevolutionNow Let the struggle continue even if they take my life! #BuhariMustGo”

The political activist has been rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

Just In: One feared dead as gas explosion rocks Obasanjo Building

One person has been feared dead, while another has been injured, following a gas explosion which occurred at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Vanguard reported that it occurred around 11am at the Marque event centre within the Presidential Library when technicians were topping up gas into the air conditioner (AC).

It was further learnt that at the moment, security guards at the gate are turning people back. Only the truck of the State Fire Service and some officials were allowed into the premises.

BREAKING!!! Govt House On Fire

A fire outbreak has occurred at the Maiduguri Government House, Borno on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a report by Sun, the fire started at about 3 pm at one of the powerhouses where generators providing electricity for the entire Government House was situated.

Some personnel said the fire started from the generator which is about 400 metres to Governor Babagana Zulum’s office, shortly after a technical staff member refilled its tank with petrol.

The fire was put off shortly by the combined efforts of the staff and fire service unit of the house.

The Government House in Maiduguri has the official residence and office of the governor, residences of the security aides and junior staff, other offices including the department of press and media affairs among others.

Maiduguri has been without electricity supply from the national grid since late January following incessant attacks by Boko Haram terrorists on power transmission facilities.

Two INEC Offices Burnt Down In Ebonyi

Two offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ebonyi State have been set ablaze by unidentified persons.

The offices are located in Ebonyi and Ezza North Local Government Areas of the state.

It was gathered that no casualties were recorded but there were extensive damages to the building and facilities.

The Commission is yet to issue a full statement on the incident.

DAILY POST reports that the latest attack brings the number of offices of the Commission that have been torched to 23.

This is coming weeks after the commission’s offices in Akwa Ibom, Abia, Anambra, Enugu and Imo were also razed by unknown hoodlums.

Breaking: Boat sinks as Over 50 person got missing

More than 50 people were missing Tuesday when their boat sank after leaving Libya heading to Europe, Tunisia’s defence ministry said, with 33 others rescued.

Defence ministry spokesman Mohamed Zikri said the survivors of the shipwreck were picked up after clinging to an oil platform off the southern coast of Tunisia.

“There are 33 survivors, all apparently from Bangladesh,” Flavio Di Giacomo, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration, told AFP. “At least 50 are missing.”

The boat, crammed with over 90 passengers, left the Libyan port of Zuwara on Sunday.

It was not immediately clear what caused the boat to sink, but vessels leaving the North African coast for Europe are often heavily overloaded makeshift crafts, departing at night even in rough weather to avoid detection from the coastguard.

Tunisian rescuers were bringing the survivors to the port of Zarzis, some 100 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of Zuwara.

“We don’t know the nationality of the more than 50 who are missing,” Di Giacomo added.

At least 1,200 migrants died in the Mediterranean last year, most of them crossing the central part of the sea, according to the United Nations.

Libya is a key gateway for Europe-bound migrants.

According to the IOM, more than 500 people have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from the shores of North Africa to Italy and Malta since the start of 2021.

On Monday, the Tunisian navy said it had rescued more than 100 migrants, mainly from Bangladesh and Sudan, whose boat was “on the verge of sinking”.

Several boats were also stopped by Libyan coastguards and brought back to shore overnight Sunday.

“Two days ago about 680 migrants were intercepted at sea and returned to Libya by the Libyan,” Di Giacomo said.

“Almost 9,000 have been intercepted at sea and returned to Libya in 2021 so far,” he added.

Safa Msehli, IOM spokeswoman for the Geneva-based UN agency, said that support for search and rescue teams “should be contingent on no one  being arbitrarily detained or subjected to human rights violations”, warning that “without such guarantees, such support should be reconsidered”.

The European Union has for several years supported Libyan forces to try to stem migration, despite often grim conditions in detention centres in Libya.

Sad News: Tears In Delta as Mother, two Children Burnt to death

A 34-year-old woman and her two children have been reportedly burnt beyond recognition in a gas explosion at Amekpa area, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The Guardian gathered that the incident occurred on Tuesday evening when the gas cylinder the deceased used in cooking suddenly exploded.

The names of the woman and her children could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, but it was learnt that when the gas cylinder exploded, a section of the building housing two flats was razed down by the fire.

It was also learnt that the husband of the deceased, who is a commercial tricycle operator, was not at home when the incident occurred.

Some residents said the family had newly moved to the area from Warri.

Eyewitnesses said that some residents and sympathisers who made frantic efforts to save the victims and put out the fire sustained injuries from the fire.

The eyewitness explained that the inferno would have extended to neighbouring buildings but the prompt response from the personnel of the Delta State Fire Service in Ughelli saved the situation.

The father of the deceased children had attempted to jump into the fire to save his family, but he was held back when it was discovered that the victims had already died.

According to an eyewitness: “The man is a Keke driver and was the one that brought the children from school. He had just returned this evening to meet their home on fire. His wife and two children were inside the burning house.

“He wanted to go inside if he could help rescue them, but neighbours held him down to allow firefighters and sympatisers to put off the fire.

“While the woman died inside the kitchen where she was said to be cooking, her children were burnt in the parlour.”

Occupants of the second flat, which was also razed down, were however lucky as the explosion occurred when they were out of their home.

The bodies of the deceased have been reportedly evacuated to the mortuary at the Ughelli Central Hospital by officials of the fire service.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Edafe Bright, simply said: “I am not aware of the incident.”

Killing: "Nowhere Is Safe Anymore" - Serious Tension Raging in Abuja

Pandemonium broke out on Sunday near St. Mary Catholic Church along Nyanya-Karshi Road in Abuja when some motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders stormed the area protesting the alleged incessant killing of colleagues and stealing of their motorcycles.

An eyewitness, Moses AgureDam, told DAILY POST that the protesters resorted to violence which aroused tension in the area as residents were fleeing for their lives.

He added that “there have been reported cases of bike theft around Karu road, this issue has been on for a while now until the Okada riders decided to carry out a protest today”.

When contacted by DAILY POST correspondent, the Police Public Relations Officer in the Federal Capital Territory, Maryam Yusuf confirmed the incident.

“According to her, “they are protesting the death of one of their colleagues.

“However, we have been able to restore calm and the command has launched an investigation into the incident”.

Another source, Friday Lawani told our correspondent that some soldiers are currently in the area shooting sporadically to disperse the protesters.

“Soldiers are currently firing gun everywhere as we speak and the protesters who are mostly Hausa boys are running back to their base”.

“There is tension here now over a possible attack by the protesters in subsequent time”, he said.

BREAKING: Truck loaded with ammunition falls in Anambra

A truck loaded with ammunition on Sunday crashed into Onitsha, Anambra province.

Boxes of live ammunition spread across the road as a truck fell into a ditch and destroyed its contents.

When the truck driver was arrested by police, his conductor fled.

A source told our correspondent, “The incident occurred on the Awka Road,” adding, “It was discovered by those going to the church early in the morning”.

“The incident has attracted heavy security presence to the Awka Road Area and ShopRite axis of the city.

“The truck, a Mercedes Benz 911 model. was moving the goods out of Onitsha to a yet-to-be-identified location when the driver lost control before it skidded off the road and fell into a gutter.

Another source said, “The truck fell around 5am. The driver and his conductor after sustaining minor injuries tried to evacuate and conceal the contents of the truck but they could not do much before daybreak when some police operatives arrived at the scene and discovered the truck was laden with live bullets.

 

“The police called for backup and arrested the truck driver while his conductor escaped.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, IkengTochukwu said, “I have not been briefed about the incident. I will get back to you when I get the details.”

Tears in Imo as many mothers crushed to death

About 20 persons were feared dead in separate auto crashes in Osun, Ogun and Imo states on Friday night and Saturday.

Eight lives were lost in Osogbo when a truck conveying kegs of palm oil and 61 passengers lost control while ascending a bridge along Osogbo/Gbongan road and fell into drainage ditch.

At least 36 passengers were said to have been injured in the accident that occurred around 1am, while the goods were destroyed.

Osun Sector Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Agnes Ogungbemi, said the accident was caused by overloading.

She explained that the vehicle was ascending the bridge when it started moving backwards and lost control.

She said, “The vehicle heavily loaded with jerry cans of palm oil and over 60 passengers was trying to ascend the ramp, but it rolled backwards and lost control.

“The vehicle fell sideways into the drainage, throwing the jerry cans over the passengers and killing some of them in the process.

“Probable cause of the accident is overloading. Thirty six people were injured and eight people died. The truck had 61 people on board.

“The injured victims were taken to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo and Asubiaro State Hospital, Osogbo. Dead victims had been taken to a mortuary.”

In Imo, about 10 women were feared dead while many were injured after a truck crashed into a market along Anara-Orlu Expressway, Nkwommiri, in the Nwangele Local Government Area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the truck lost control of its brakes and crushed the women who were trading by the roadside in the market around noon.

It was gathered that the truck was navigating a hill when it lost brakes, killing the traders after ramming into other vehicles.

A youth leader in the market, Adolphus Adolphus, toldSunday PUNCHthat some of the victims were crushed into a nearby river.

He said, “The worst has happened here. A truck that lost its brakes has killed women trading by the roadside at Nkwommir. More than 10 of them were killed and many trapped.”

Another community leader, Frank Ozuruigbo, said the community was working with government officials to rescue those trapped in the crash.

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, said the rescue mission was ongoing, adding that two persons had been confirmed dead.

In Ogun, tragedy struck on Friday night when a truck crushed two motorcyclists to death in an accident on the Abeokuta-Ibadan Road.

Our correspondent gathered that the accident involved two motorcycles and a truck opposite a filling station around Kotopo in the Odeda LGA of the state.

The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Mr Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident to journalist on Saturday in Abeokuta.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident which occurred at 8.25pm was caused by reckless driving and impatience on the part of the motorcycle riders.

He said, “The accident was caused by reckless driving and impatience on the part of the motorcyclists as they rammed into a truck moving in the opposite direction. The two motorcycles and the truck have been taken to Aregbe Police Station in Abeokuta.”

He added that one of the deceased was taken away by his relatives while the body of the second victim was deposited at the morgue of Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba in Abeokuta after being confirmed dead by a medical doctor at the hospital. ,,
